Obituary

Agnes Warne Blackstone, 103, died on Sunday, March 30, 2025.  She was a 72-year resident of Plymouth Meeting, PA.

Agnes was born in Cumberland Bay, New Brunswick, Canada in 1921, to English immigrant parents.  She spent her childhood on a small farm in rural Lithia, Florida, where her family moved in 1923. In 1932, the family moved to Newtown, PA, where Agnes's father was fortunate to find work during the Great Depression.  Agnes, her sister Connie, and brother Donald all attended high school at George School, a Quaker boarding school in Newtown.  She always spoke of those years with great fondness.

After graduation in 1938, Agnes enrolled in a secretarial training program at Rider College in Trenton, NJ.  In 1940, she was hired at Jeanes Hospital in northeast Philadelphia, then a cancer hospital.  Agnes loved the job—she attended surgeries, took notes and typed up the reports. Two years later, she was offered a job at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia. There she met Archie Blackstone, an engineer in the growing radiology department.  They married in 1943, and had two children, Frances and Amy.

A Quaker, Agnes was a long-time member of Plymouth Friends Meeting.  She was a dedicated volunteer, serving on Meeting committees and helping with Friends General Conference annual events.  An avid reader, she volunteered at Jeanes Library in Lafayette Hill, PA.  After Archie died in 1979, she enjoyed working at various corporate law libraries, and became an intrepid European traveler.  She delighted in visiting family in England, Mexico, and South Africa.

Agnes's love of Scrabble cannot be overstated.  A reader of mysteries and histories, she loved crosswords, too.  Even in the years when she could no longer see even the largest print, we could read crossword clues to her, and say how many letters, and she would nail the word.  She also loved cats, the Shore (especially Ship Bottom), going downtown to the orchestra, lunch at the Greek place or the deli, card games with friends, long drives, sewing and knitting, and most especially, her family.

Agnes will be deeply missed by daughters Frances Blackstone and Amy Blackstone  (Andrew Maykuth), granddaughters Rebecca Brame, Kate Blackstone (Brandi), and Molly Brame (Ramon Dominguez Neri), great grandchildren Alex Montgomery (Celeste Harrill), Hannah Barkat, and Stella Barkat.  Services will be private, with a memorial service to be held at a later date.  Donations in Agnes's memory may be made to Plymouth Quaker Meeting, https://www.plymouthmeetingquakers.org/ .
