Albert Russell Harris was born December 2, 1933, to the late William Kelly and Madeline Howard in Chester, PA. On Monday, October 3, 2022, he made his transition to heaven. Born and raised in Chester PA, he graduated from Chester High School in 1952. He was a lifetime member of Providence Baptist Church in Chester, PA where he attended and was baptized. Al or Sarg as he was affectionally known was an athlete, playing both football and was a record setting javelin thrower. Upon graduation, he worked at Ford Motor Company until he found his calling with the Philadelphia Police Department. Throughout his 37-year career, in addition to mentoring several officers, he received the highest commendations including multiple medals of valor. He climbed the ranks to captain, and retired September 8th, 1998, as the commander of the City's largest district.
After retirement, he fulfilled his lifelong aspiration of completing his college education. He earned a Certificate in Criminal Justice from Saint Joseph's College in 1979 and his Associate's in Letters, Arts and Sciences from Saint Joseph's University in May 2011. At the age of 79, he would complete his first Bachelor of Science degree from Penn State Abington in 2013. In December 2016, he completed a second Bachelor of Arts degree from Penn State.
Al was a world traveler. As an Ambassador for People to People of America and consultant to 2020 Vision being referred by his great friend, the late Dick Jackman, he visited every continent except South America, and several countries including China, Russia, South Africa, and Cote d'Ivoire. Between his law enforcement career and travels, he would meet and assist several U.S. Presidents, dignitaries, and celebrities. He would often discuss with family and friends the meeting he treasured most, the time he spent with former President of South Africa, the late Nelson Mandela.
In addition to his career and world travels, Sarg had a love for Jazz music. He loved the old greats and played drums to songs from his extensive record collection. In his leisure time, he collected trains and read books from his ever-growing library . He was adding to his library two books he was writing. For the last 35 years, beaches were his favorite vacation destination. Albert Russell Harris treasured his family. He fostered a love of learning and education in his children and grandchildren. On December 14, 1993, he married Cynthia Kemp. They were married for 28 years. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Palmer, Rupert (Kenny), and Lawrence, and his eldest daughter Robin Catherine Harris. He leaves to carry on his legacy wife Cynthia, brothers Carey Burns and Ronald Kelly (Artese), Uncle Harry Kelly (Bernice), and children Tina Marie Harris Woodson (Lawrence), Lila Madeline Young (Ricky), Dr. Yvette Monique Harris, Corey Kemp (Lisa), Richard Yusef Kemp Sr. (Kimberly) and his namesake, Albert Russell Harris II (Cynthia). He was the proud grandfather to Michael, Andrea, Yusef, Tabitha, Brieyanna, Alexandra, Marquise, Chyanne, Richard Jr., Corey, Kyree, Ariana and one great grandson, Maurice along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends.
