Barbara Lucia Hatfield Johnson Green, loving sister, aunt, and friend, has passed away at the age of 95. Barbara was the eldest of four children born in August, 1928 in New York, NY to Edgar and Madelyn (Mason) Johnson. Barbara's family moved to Philadelphia in 1936. After graduating from Philadelphia High School for Girls, she went to work in Washington, DC for the U.S. Government, then transitioned to healthcare administration at Childrens' Hospital of Philadelphia, Mercy Douglas Hospital, and finally at the University of Pennsylvania from where she retired. In 1955, Barbara married William DePriest Green, and to that union was born her beloved son, Stacey DePriest Raynor Green. In her family's tradition, Barbara was a lover of music of every genre. Over the last decades of her life, she and her sister, Sylvia, maintained season tickets for the Philadelphia Orchestra and Pennsylvania Ballet at the Academy of Music and Kimmel Center. They never missed a performance until her recent illness. She was also a ferocious reader all of her life, mystery novels were her favorite. Barbara also served her community in many ways. She was a dedicated election worker for many years, a volunteer for Weavers Way Coop, and was active in West Mt. Airy Neighbors for many years. Barbara was actively engaged in community projects including fiercely advocating during AIDS epidemic for Mt. Airy's first AIDS convalescent and hospice center in the 1980s. She always advocated for cohesive neighborhoods, civic engagement, and was faithful to her church, St. Martin in the Fields. Along with her two sisters, Barbara shared the "50 Good Neighbors" award in 2010. Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved son, Stacey, sister, Madelyn, and her parents Edgar Sr. & Madelyn. She is survived by her sister, Sylvia, brother, Edgar Jr. (Buddy), niece, Merle, nephews, Nigel and Jose, many cousins, and her dear friends, Theresa, Priscilla, Jill, and Linda. Barbara will be laid to rest at a private graveside service at St. Martin in the Fields, Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia.
