Obituary

Carl F. Cassel passed away peacefully on February 1, 2021 in Voorhees, NJ.  He was 86 years old.  Born on July 22, 1934 in Broad Axe, PA, he was a son of the late Ralph H. and Rachel Rebecca (Phifer) Cassel.

After graduating from Ambler High School in 1952, he served honorably in the United States Army, transferring to the US Army Reserves before beginning his career as a Quality Inspector for the Factory Production Industry.  In 1958, he met a girl named Nancy Satterthwaite while roller-skating and thus began a lifelong love affair of almost sixty-two years.

Beginning their married lives in 1959 in Newtown and Yardley, PA, they moved to Voorhees, NJ.  From there, their family grew with the addition of their daughter, Karen and then their son, Carl Jr..   Carl inspired his family with a love of traveling, providing the experiences of multiple lifetimes in the great expanse of the United States and beyond.  In particular, he loved Cape Hatteras, NC where he would find any time he could to go surf fishing.

A favorite travel destination was the Pocono Mountains, where he and the love of his life decided to retire in 2001, building a log cabin in Dingmans Ferry, PA.  During the cold winter nights, they cozied up to the fireplace, often with a history book in hand.  In warmer months, he would often be found swimming in the local lake.

He could never satisfy his love of history, touring so many national parks, including the Normandy American Cemetery in France, and many other historical Civil War locations such as the Gettysburg Battlefield, Harpers Ferry, and Antietam.

A Philadelphia area local, he fostered a love of all Philly sports, especially his favorite baseball team, the Philadelphia Phillies.  He had a strong sweet tooth, and enjoyed relatively odd food pairings including putting grape jelly on pumpkin pie, largely coming from his Mennonite and Pennsylvania Dutch heritage.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Karen (Jay) Boye of Voorhees, NJ, son Carl (Kim) Cassel, Jr. of Glassboro, NJ; granddaughter Kirsten (Michael Barone) Boye of Philadelphia, PA and a grandson Kevin (Tenninger) Boye of Conshohocken, PA; and many other family members.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by two sisters, Irene Butler and Barbara Francis and brother Ralph Cassel.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, services will be private at the request of the family.  A celebration of his life will be held for Carl once the pandemic has waned.
