Obituary

Chungna (Yoon) Doughty

December 6, 1938 – October 30, 2026

Chungna Yoon Doughty passed away on Friday, October 30, 2026, following a brief hospitalization at Lankenau Medical Center in Pennsylvania. She was 87. Born on December 6, 1938, in Hoeryung, North Hamkyung Province, near the border of present-day North Korea and China, she was the youngest daughter of Kyu Il Yoon and Kyung Hae Lee.

At age three, Chungna contracted tuberculosis that spread to her joints, leaving her with a lifelong disability affecting her legs. Those who knew her will remember her indomitable spirit and positive outlook. As a child, she endured numerous surgeries without pain medication and rode a bicycle to aid her rehabilitation despite intense pain. Until her final illness, she walked two miles every day, a daily expression of her determination and love of life.

Following Korea’s liberation in 1945, Chungna, her mother, and her brother and sister spent months making their way south across the 38th parallel. Her mother carried her, while her siblings carried what few belongings they could bring. When the Korean War broke out in 1950 and the advancing army reached Seoul, the family fled south again, eventually reuniting in Busan. Their journeys took them through treacherous terrain, where they witnessed others being captured or shot. At times, they traveled with little more than a compass to guide them south and a few days’ supply of grain powder. They were repeatedly separated, never knowing when they would see one another again.

Chungna was a gifted violinist whose love of music began with the encouragement of her brother, Hakseok. She graduated from Seoul Arts High School and Seoul National University before pursuing graduate studies at the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. She performed with the KBS Symphony Orchestra, the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra, and the Delaware Symphony Orchestra. She taught at public high schools in Philadelphia for more than 30 years and continued teaching after her retirement at Little Flower Catholic High School.

Faith was the grounding force in Chungna’s life. She grew up with her maternal grandmother, who helped missionaries travel from town to town by donkey to share the Gospel in Korea. Inspired by that example, Chungna strove each day to live like Jesus. She lived by the words of 1 Thessalonians 5:16–18: “Always be joyful. Never stop praying. Be thankful in all circumstances.” She often said she was thankful even for her disability, because it encouraged her to care for her body and walk every day. Chungna served as a director of the Philip Jaisohn Memorial Foundation and the Philadelphia Korean Musicians Union, and as a deaconess at the Korean United Church of Philadelphia.

Chungna was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 47 years, Carl B. Doughty, who passed away on November 22, 2021. She is survived by her nieces and nephews Sungae Yoon, Keunchul Yoon, Youngchul Yoon, and Soongchul Yoon in Korea; Paul Yoon, and David Yoon in the United States; and many other family members and friends.

Her courage, music, faith, and joyful spirit will be remembered by all who knew and loved her.
