Conrad was born at Fort Ethan Allen, Burlington, Vermont to the late Conrad G. and Marcia (nee: Mylkes) Follansbee Sr. on October 30, 1926.

Conrad enlisted in the army on D-Day and his unit, the 98th Infantry "Iroquois" Division, was stationed in Hawaii when the bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He served a year in Osaka, Japan as part of the occupying forces.

He returned to the states and earned his BA from the University of Kansas while based at Fort Leavenworth. There he met Mary Ann Elizabeth "Betty" Bergquist. They were soon married and stationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina where he trained as a jumper in the 505th Airborne Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division. Upon retirement from active duty, he joined the army reserves and was ultimately promoted to the rank of major.  Conrad was proud to serve his country.

Conrad started his long post-army career as a history teacher and tactical officer at Valley Forge Military Academy. He moved his family to Long Island, New York to teach in the public schools, while earning a Master's Degree in Education from Hofstra University.  His last full-time position was in the Brentwood School District as principal of the Maslow-Toffler School of Futuristic Education, retiring in1982. As a beloved and admired teacher and administrator, Conrad continued to hear from students and colleagues about his positive, and often life-changing impact on their lives.  Many noted his integrity, honesty, fairness, and sense of humor.  The highest accolade: "He was a good man."

In retirement, Red and Betty returned to Pennsylvania.
