IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Doris S.
Magers
July 3, 1921 – July 2, 2022
Doris Stevens Magers, beloved wife of the late William R. Magers, quietly passed away in her sleep on the morning of July 2, 2022 in Collegeville. It was just one day before her 101st birthday.
Doris was born in the Germantown section of Philadelphia, the only child of the late John and Laura Tuckerman Stevens. She graduated at the age of 16 from Germantown High School. She then earned a BA in journalism from the University of Pennsylvania (1942). Along the way she was elected class president and May Queen.
She also captured the heart of William Magers. But before they could marry there was a war to be won. Doris enlisted with the newly created Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES). She served in Washington DC with Naval Intelligence, rising to the rank of lieutenant.
In 1945 she married Bill and they briefly lived in El Paso while he completed his commission. They next settled in Philadelphia. For the next 15 years she devoted her life exclusively to raising their four children. Then, in 1960, Doris accepted a position at the United Lutheran Board of Publications. She worked there for 26 years as administrative assistant to the director.
In 1995 She and Bill retired to Jeffersonville, PA where she volunteered as a reading tutor in the nearby elementary school and at the Cabin Shop of the George Washington Memorial Chapel. But mainly she enjoyed keeping up with her children, grandchildren, and friends, old and new. We could always expect a birthday card from "Mimi".
Through a century of technological and social transition, Doris welcomed each day with grace and an open mind, contributing her part along the way. Her smile lit up the world. Her loving presence will be missed by all.
She is survived by her children; Stephen (Ronni), Leslie Vaccarelli, and John (Kim), 9 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her daughter, Carol L.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend her funeral service on Saturday, August 13, 2022 at the Heritage Chapel at George Washington Memorial Park, 80 Stenton Avenue, Plymouth Meeting, PA 19460 at 11:00 AM. Burial with military honors will follow at George Washington Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Daniel McMenamin Endowment at https://wwwdtmfund.com
