Obituary of Dorothy Burkey

Dorothy Marie (Leonard) Burkey, 89, of Taylor's Island, MD, died Tuesday, January 14, 2014.

She was born to the late Joseph P. and Eva (Bernsteil) Leonard on October 9, 1924, in Conshohocken, PA where she also attended St. Matthew's School. She married Robert L. Burkey on July 29, 1944 and had five children. She was employed by Norristown Area Public School System until her retirement in 1984 when she moved to Maryland with her husband.

Dorothy was a devoted Catholic and upon retirement, she was a dedicated homemaker and enjoyed spending all her time with her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Robert L. Burkey; her children Robert L. Burkey, Jr. of Norristown, PA; Gary (Mildred) Burkey of Secretary, MD; Joseph (Patricia) Burkey of Norristown, PA; Dorothea (Thomas) Matey of Hurlock, MD; and Michael Burkey of Jenkintown, PA; 22 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; sisters, Helen (Andrew) Johnstone of Trooper, PA; Rita McCarron of Conshohocken, PA and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Dorothy was preceded in death by two brothers and eight sisters.

Relatives and friends are invited to her viewing on Monday, January 20th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Kirk and Nice Funeral Home, 80 Stenton Ave., Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462. A Catholic service will be held at 11:00 a.m. and Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park.
