Obituary of Dorothy Guy

Dorothy Jane Cook Guy passed peacefully at home on January 7, 2015 surrounded by her family.

She was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut on March 22, 1922, the second oldest of 4 children. She lived most of her life in the Philadelphia area. For the last 58 years she resided in West Mount Airy; a community she loved with her heart and soul.

Dorothy was a proud and devoted mother to her 6 children. She often said that raising her 6 children was the most rewarding part of her life. She loved both being a mother and participating in the vibrant community of West Mount Airy.

Dorothy was active at Henry School during the many years she had children in attendance there. She was a founding member of the PTA at Henry School and also initiated it''s newsletter, the Henry Herald. She was also a founding member of the Weaver''s Way Coop and over the years served on its board, including as president of the board. She helped in the creation of the Weaver''s Way newsletter, the Shuttle. Summit Church was also enriched by her years of service and attendance. She formed strong bonds of friendship with many people at Summit and Weaver''s Way. She was beloved and respected for her keen intelligence, strong leadership, visionary thinking, fair mindedness, and unfailing ability to bring comic relief when it was most needed.

In recent years one of Dorothy''s greatest joys was to sit on her front porch in good weather and watch the parade of people go by as they headed to the COOP or the local cafe. She especially enjoyed seeing all of the families with strollers and dogs.

Dorothy was predeceased by her beloved husband Emory. She is survived by her 6 children Thomas, Gregory, Stephen, Cynthia, Rachel, Shannon, and their partners, 13 grandchildren, and 5 great grandchildren, and by her brother David and sister Donna Jean.

We miss her deeply but see and enjoy her legacy in the faces of her family and in the neighborhood she loved.

We would also like to thank her hospice nurse Peggy for her compassionate care and great hugs. And thanks as well to Dr.Linda Good for many years of care.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Summit Presbyterian Church, 6757 Greene St. Philadelphia, PA 19119.
