Edward J.
Furman Sr.
July 19, 1954 – March 20, 2022
Edward Furman Sr, 67, of Blue Bell, a retired CPA, husband, father, and grandfather, died Sunday, Mar . 20, of complications from lung cancer at his home in Blue Bell, PA surrounded by family .
He was b orn in 1954 in Abington, PA to Leon and Jeanette (nee Smith) Furman . He was the youngest child with siblings, Ellen, Betty, Leone, and Frank. Mr. Furman graduated from Abington High School in 1972. He attended Drexel University and graduated with a Bachelor's degree in accounting. He worked at Price Waterhouse as a CPA rising to the position of Senior Manager. In 1987 he joined the accounting firm Maillie LLP (formerly Maillie Falconiero & Co . ) where he later became partner before his retirement in 2019. As a CPA he specialized in accounting for small businesses and government agencies.
Mr. Furman met his wife Ruth (nee Getty) of 42 years at a n intramural softball game between his Price Waterhouse team against the Textile University Accounting team in Roxborough. They were married in 1979 at St. Timothy ' s Episcopal Church in Roxborough. He was the father of Edward , Jr . (Dana), Kelley ( Ch ristos), and Daniel , and the poppop of Edward "Tripp" III.
Mr. Furman believed in public service as the best way of improving the community around him . In the 1980's he served as a Township Supervisor in Towamencin Twp, Montgomery County. He later served as Township Auditor in Whitpain Twp, Montgomery County in the late 2000s. Mr. Furman was a member of the Montgomery County Commission on Waste Reduction and Fiscal Controls, a bi-partisan committee purposed with providing recommendations to save money and run the county more efficiently. He served as a board member of the Montgomery County Community College Foundation where he assisted scholarship efforts for students in need.
He was passionate about the environment. Mr. Furman c o-founded the first county wide recycling program in Montgomery C ounty. He later served on the board of Wissahickon Trails , the non-profit organization that protects the Wissahickon Watershed. He l ed the effort to acquire the 77 acres of what became Fischer's Park, the largest park facility in Towamencin Twp .
Mr. Furman believed in helping those who suffered from addiction. He c o-founded Montgomery County's first drug and alcohol program that would later become the M ontCo Drug and Alcohol Planning Council. He served on the board of the Lincoln Academy (now the Lincoln Center Leadership Academy at Audubon), a day treatment counseling and educational service for troubled youth grades 7-12 who would otherwise face institutionalization .
He also gave his time to assist those in his profession. Mr. Furman was a member of the Accounting Advisory Council for Drexel University's LeBow College of Business. Additionally, he served on numerous boards of the Pennsylvania Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
Mr. Furman was a devout Christian and s erved on the vestry of St. Matthew's Episcopal Church. He also volunteered his time as the church Treasurer. Ed and Ruth would often be found at the 7:45 a.m. mass.
Mr. Furman passed on his love of sports to his children. He would often be found coaching their y outh sports teams, at one point serving as the Commissioner of the Towamencin Youth Association. While suffering through countless losing seasons of Philadelphia sports, h e enjoyed being able to see an Eagles Superbowl victory with his family. He enjoyed playing golf. He was a founding member at Commonwealth National Golf Club, at one point serving on the Board of Directors. He would often have a 6:00 a.m. tee time so he would be able to still have a full day with his family.
Mr. Furman was a Mason. He was a member of Mitchell Lodge #81 in Chestnut Hill. Also members at that lodge were his father-in-law John Getty, brothers-in-law Robert and Harry Getty, and cousin Gerald Widmann .
There will be a public viewing Sunday, Mar . 27 at Kirk and Nice Funeral Home, 80 Stenton Ave, Plymouth Meeting, PA, from 2-4 PM and on Monday Mar. 28 from 9:45-10:45 AM at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church , 919 Tennis Ave, Maple Glen, PA followed by his funeral service at 11 AM. Interment will follow at George Washington Memorial Park, Plymouth Meeting.
