Edythe Gray Galloway Lewis, born on February 1, 1934, in Vanceboro, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on August 18, 2025, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, at the age of 91.

Edythe devoted her life to service and care, working as a Registered Nurse with deep compassion and dedication. In her later years, she took special pride in caring for a disabled child named Joshua, bringing comfort, joy, and dignity to him and his family. Nursing wasn't just a profession to her it was her ministry, her way of living out her faith. She pursued higher education with some college studies and built a career centered on helping others, both professionally and personally.

A devout Christian and longtime member of St. John's, Edythe lived her faith through action. She donated to numerous organizations and gave her time generously, volunteering for many Democratic leaders, including Mayor Wilson Goode, the first African American mayor of Philadelphia. Her lifelong commitment to her community and its progress was recognized with the Spirit of Philadelphia Award.

Edythe enjoyed hobbies that reflected her curious and meticulous spirit. She was an avid collector of stamps, coins, and baseball cards, and in her earlier years, she took delight in planning bus trips to Atlantic City casinos for friends and family.

Born the second youngest of eleven children to Florence Pugh Galloway and Dempsey Galloway, Edythe was the last surviving sibling of their remarkable family. She is survived by her beloved son, Joseph Navarro Lewis Jr., who carries forward her love, wisdom, and strength.

Her legacy is one of faith, service, and devotion—qualities that touched all who had the privilege of knowing her. Edythe will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
