IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Elizabeth Ann
Mccullough
October 23, 1932 – December 12, 2023
Elizabeth Ann ("Betty") McCullough (née Ramsay), matriarch of the Ramsay-McCullough clan, passed away peacefully in her home on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 at age 91. She crossed over with her loving husband by her side, surrounded by multiple generations of the adoring family that they created.
Betty was brazen and forward-thinking; a modern woman born in 1932. She had a tenacious desire to learn and feel the heartbeat of the world through reading books, newspapers and watching the news. Betty was endowed with the Irish gift of gab. She held passionate, well-founded opinions about most things and most people. She was everyone's 'desert island' conversationalist. Conversations with Betty made time and all worries disappear.
Betty had a keen eye for fashion and design. She loved to make herself and the spaces around her beautiful. She was always immaculately groomed and impeccably dressed, and she instilled in her family the same pride in appearance. From her first breath to her last, Betty was graceful and gorgeous. The home she built with her husband, Bob, was similarly beautiful and lovingly curated. Their door was always open to family and friends, a shelter from the throes of life.
Betty shared a tight bond with her four younger sisters, Ginny, Margaret, Susan and Nancy. She grew up and attended high school in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. Betty met the love of her life, Robert ("Bob") McCullough at a soda shop in the neighborhood. The two different personalities magnetized and their love became "the irresistible force and the immovable object," as Betty's mother, Theresa Kelly, liked to say. Thus, the legendary Ramsay-McCullough clan kicked into gear. Bob and Betty's 71-year marriage provided an exemplar for the rest of the family. If you asked Betty for marriage advice, though, she would always keep it simple and truthful: just love one another. What else is there to know?
With her family, love came so easily to Betty. She lavished attention on her 8 children and 16 grandchildren, all of whom cherished time with her. She had encyclopedic knowledge of each of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, down to their food preferences and birthmarks. Betty was deeply proud, but never prideful. She ushered us through the ups and downs of life, always pouring her confidence into each of us, never letting us slip.
Betty focused and devoted all of her great qualities to her family, for our benefit, as opposed to her own self-interest. In doing so, she built a large and incredible family that adored her. In a different life, she could have been successful in almost anything, but instead, she chose us.
Betty is survived by her husband, Bob, her sisters, Susan Montague and Nancy McElroy (husband John), her children Debbie McEldrew (husband Jim), Susan McCullough, John McCullough (wife Carol), Carolyn Fein (husband Ariel), Joanne Steigelmann (husband Andy) and Margaret Desch (fiancé Marco), her daughter-in-law Maryann McCullough-Nikander, her grandsons Andy McCullough (wife Stephanie), Tommy McCullough (wife Alex), Ryan Desch (wife Jessie), Michael McEldrew, Jimmy McEldrew (wife Emily), Jake McCullough, Max McCullough, Ryley Fein, Aidan Steigelmann and Bobby Steigelmann, her granddaughters Caitlin McEldrew (husband Andrew), Theresa Kelly Sheva (husband Brett), Elizabeth Kerchner (husband Brian), Alex Fein, Anna Desch and Katie Desch, her great-grandsons Sydney Batjiaka, Luke Kerchner, Parker Sheva, Jamie McEldrew, Owen McCullough, Cameron Desch, Connor Kerchner and Cormac Batjiaka, and many nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, Theresa Kelly and Thomas Ramsay, her beloved son and daughter, Bobby McCullough and Sandy McCullough, respectively, and her sisters, Ginny Morris and Margaret Forcella.
As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
