Obituary

ELIZABETH ANN (BETTY) DIDIO ZAPPALA

Born to an unknown mother in Chester, PA, on February 4th 1935,
Elizabeth, or Betty as she preferred to be called, spent much of her
youth in & out of an orphanage, after being given up by her birth
mother at the age of three. Finally, at around age 11, she went to live
with Frank and Rose DiDio of South Philadelphia, who then adopted
her. There, she found a very loving and comfortable home.
Betty loved to sing and eventually received formal voice training and
was found to have a beautiful and powerful operatic voice, which she
enjoyed sharing in church and for family weddings & funerals. In her
late teens, she had the opportunity to receive an apprenticeship in an
opera company. However, love came calling as she had met her future
husband in the church choir, Alfred (Fred) Zappala. This gave Betty
the opportunity to create for herself the family she craved.
They married in October of 1956 and settled in South Philadelphia,
then relocated to Plymouth Meeting in 1963. Betty and Fred had three
sons, Mike, Fred Jr. and Paul. Betty's family continued to grow as
grandchildren were born through her 3 sons' families, and later
great-grandchildren. Betty and Fred later relocated to Sebastian
Florida in 1990, with Fred preceding her in death in 2019.
On Tuesday, February 27th, 2024, Betty was called home by our
merciful Father and she went to her peaceful eternal rest. In lieu of
flowers, please make a donation to the VNA Hospice House in Vero
Beach, Florida.
