Obituary of George Callanan, Sr.
George Milton Callanan, 89, of King-of-Prussia, Pa. died on August 24, 2015 after a brief illness. Born in East Falls, Pa. on April 7, 1926, he was the son of Anthony and Sara Callanan.
He graduated from William Penn Charter School in 1944. A World War II veteran, he served in the U.S. Army in the Philippines from 1944 to 1946, receiving decorations that included the Philippine Liberation Medal with two Bronze Stars, the Army Occupational Medal (Japan) and a Distinguished Unit Badge.
When he returned home, he earned his B.A. degree in marketing from The Wharton School of The University of Pennsylvania. He was national sales manager for Allenwood Steel Company, retiring after 23 years. His next career was as a judge''s court crier for Montgomery County Courthouse for 15 years.
He was an avid Philadelphia sports fan and enjoyed reading everything from biographies to history to fiction. He was also interested in music and had been a drummer in a high school band.
He is survived by his two sons, George M. Callanan, Jr. (husband of Laura), Lititz, Pa., and David P. Callanan (husband of Mary Louise), Flourtown, Pa. His grandchildren are Megan E. Callanan Korzon, Georgia; David Porter Callanan, Jr., New York, N.Y.; and Cameron L. Callanan, Flourtown, Pa. He is also survived by a cousin Sally Humphries (wife of Charles), Flourtown, Pa. and nephew Anthony Callanan (husband of Ginny), California.
He will be honored at a military funeral at Washington Crossing Military Cemetery, Newtown, Pa. on August 31 at 11 a.m.
