IN LOVING MEMORY OF
George E.
Steinmetz
February 27, 1928 – January 14, 2021
George Emil Steinmetz, 92, of Collegeville, PA, peacefully passed away on January 14, 2021 surrounded by his family.
Born in Lafayette Hill, PA, on February 27, 1928, he was one of nine siblings and a graduate of Springfield Montco High School, Class of 1945. He was a Navy Veteran and served as a Store Keeper on the minesweeper, USS Tercel. Upon his honorable discharge from active service, he graduated first in his class from Spring Garden College with a degree in Automotive technology.
He worked initially at Lee Templeton Motors, a Chrysler dealer in Norristown, PA. He then started his own collision repair shop, Steinmetz & Gaynor. After 35 years he retired, pursuing his hobbies and spending time with family. He was married 64 years to the late Joan Kuehn Steinmetz before her passing in 2014. He met Joan while working part time during college at Old Comfort Heating and Oil in Plymouth Meeting, PA.
He cherished spending time with his family and loved his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was an avid reader of Westerns, especially Louis L'Amour and enjoyed Sudoku puzzles. If not at home, he could be found at Rolling Turf golf course in Schwenksville, PA with his golf buddies. He shot under his age in golf several times, had numerous hole-in-ones, and walked and carried his own golf bag up until age 89.
George played all kinds of sports including bowling, darts, baseball, and was a gymnast in high school. He never missed listening to or watching the Philadelphia Phillies, his favorite team.
He had a tool for every need and was the consummate "Mr. Fix-It". He would relish figuring out how something worked and then getting it back to working order.
George was also an avid fisherman and enjoyed making his own lures and flies. He looked forward to the numerous trips he made to Minor Bay Lodge on Lake Wollaston in Saskatchewan, Canada where he fished for Northern Pike.
Surviving are his three children: daughter Joan Steinmetz Howling (Robert) of Collegeville, son George Steinmetz, Jr. (Kathleen) of Malvern, and son Richard Steinmetz (Heather) of Gilbertsville; seven grandchildren, Kathryn Teats (Tim), Laura Talone (Corey), Madeline Steinmetz (Stefano), Anna Steinmetz, Olivia Steinmetz, Drew Steinmetz, and Lucas Steinmetz; five great-grandchildren, Leah Teats, Jacob Zoccola, Timothy Haraske, Reilly Talone, and Jack Talone.
Due to the Covid pandemic, a memorial service will be planned at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the Richie Ashburn / Harry Kalas Foundation, http://ashburnkalasfoundation.org/contribute-online .
