Obituary

Gregory Lee Smith was born July 24, 1954 in Miles City, Montana to David John Smith and Fannie Mae (Hamilton) Smith, both now deceased. Greg had an older brother, Gary Alan Smith and later when the family had relocated to Lancaster, California another son, Michael David Smith, was born. The family then relocated in Cocoa Beach, Florida and finally settled in Satellite Beach, Florida. Greg graduated from Satellite High School and then went to Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida.

Greg departed this earthly plane on April 17, 2016 after an accidental fall. He was 61 years old. He leaves behind his brother, Gary, married to Wynn, and their two children, Laura and Glenn, his brother Michael, married to Cris, and his two cats, Rocky and Rollo. His father's wife of 37 years, Margaret Smith, also survives him.

Greg completed a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry at FSU and went on to a position at Stuart Pharmaceuticals in Pasadena, California as a chemist. Over the years the company changed names many times, finally becoming Johnson & Johnson. Greg remained with the company for 30+ years in roles in quality assurance and IT, relocating to PA for his work. He had planned on retiring in July 2016 and making his final home in Greer, SC where Michael and Cris live. Unfortunately his life was cut short.

Greg was a devout Roman Catholic. He enjoyed studying the Bible and having lively discussions about interpretations and well as general religion and spirituality.

Greg was very much a family man. He was a very devoted uncle to Laura and Glenn, seeing them and Gary's family every other weekend. He visited Mike and Cris 3 or 4 times a year in Michigan and later in South Carolina. And he was a wonderful parent to his two pampered cats.

Greg loved to travel. He visited Europe several times with family members, in addition to going abroad for work related activities. He especially liked visiting historical sites and cathedrals.

Greg was a runner and a walker. He participated in marathons, half marathons, and 5k runs and walks several times each year. He had a goal of wanting to run in every USA state and looked forward to doing that in his retirement.

Greg loved music. He had very eclectic tastes in music and played several instruments including keyboard, guitar, and ukulele.

Greg was an avid reader, enjoying theological material as well as general non-fiction and fiction, especially thrillers. He and Cris frequently shared books. Greg also enjoyed solving puzzles, such as sudoku. He could always be found with a sudoku in his shirt pocket so he could fill empty time doing that. Greg enjoyed learning new languages and was a lifelong student of French and Spanish.

Greg was active in several GPS and smartphone games, including geocaching, Munzee, and Flagstack. He shared this interest with his brother Mike and Mike's wife Cris.

Greg was very patient, caring, and generous. He would literally give the shirt off his back to a friend or family member in need. He gifted very generously, including sponsoring participation in the MS Society of Brevard Florida walk each year. When his sister in law Cris was diagnosed with end stage renal failure he went through the training for dialysis with her because she needed a partner. He also offered to donate a kidney to her. He was generous with church donations as well.

Greg was never married and has no children. But he was a wonderful parent to his cats and an outstanding uncle to his niece and nephew.

Greg will be missed by many. He was loved and respected by all of those he encountered.

We know he has gotten his wings and will be watching over us and guiding in in the future.
