Obituary of H. Eleanor Marsden
H. Eleanor Marsden, formerly of Roslyn, PA, on February 3, 2014. Daughter of the late John and Margaret Hall, she was born on June 1, 1926 in Philadelphia. She grew up on 2nd St. with 1 sister, Margaret Dunn and 4 brothers, the late John Hall, the late Samuel Hall, the late Thomas Hall, and Winston Hall. She married the late Joseph Marsden on May 22, 1948 at the Fifth Reformed Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia. They met at the Lighthouse Dances and got married after Joe returned from WWII. They settled in Roslyn, PA in 1952 and raised 4 sons: Joseph (Judith), John (Barbra), Kerry (Brenda), and Kevin (Mary). She was extremely proud of her 11 grandchildren: Jonathan, Matthew, Steven, Casey, Maggie, Tara, Randy, Alyson, Colin, Grace, and Zach and always encouraged them in their life's ambitions. She also played an active role in the lives of her many nieces and nephews.
She had three loves: her family, bagpipes and soccer. She raised her sons well and was proud to say they were her best friends especially after her husband, Joe, passed away in 1981. She grew up with the bagpipes. Her father, John, came from Ireland with a suitcase in one hand and bagpipes in the other. He founded the Philadelphia Ulster Scottish Pipe Band which included many Hall family members and still does to this day. She was a loyal supporter of the band throughout her life and enjoyed going to the Scottish Games up and down the East Coast.
Her love of soccer came out of necessity. Her husband, Joe, was president of the Roslyn Boys and Girls Soccer Club and all 4 boys played. She was one of the founding members of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Boys and Girls Club. And of course, she became an avid soccer grandma to her 11 grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to gather on Friday, February 7th from 12 noon at the Kirk & Nice Funeral Home, 80 Stenton Ave. Plymouth Meeting, PA where services will begin at 1:30 pm. Interment to follow at Hillside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Roslyn Boys & Girls Club.
