Obituary of Harry Nutter

NUTTER, HARRY S. Jr. was born June 29, 1932 in Philadelphia, PA son of Harry S. Nutter and Sarah Nutter (nee Fuller). Harry attended St. Peter Claver Grade School and Southeast Catholic High School. He continued his education on scholarship at Lincoln University in Oxford, PA, then on to the University of Maryland, in Fairford, England and finally to Temple University, where he majored in political science. His goal was to be an attorney, however, in 1958, he was offered and accepted a position as a computer programmer. He moved up through the ranks as a computer programmer, computer systems analyst, computer systems programmer and subsequently to the position of Director, Office of Telecommunications and Information Systems, GM-15 at the Defense Personnel Support Center ( DPSC). He retired in 1993 after 42 years of government service. During his career he received many prestigious awards including Equal Employment Manager of the Year, the DLA Distinguished Career, and the Meritorious Service Award. This is one of the highest awards given to a civilian in DLA/DOD. In 1995, he was inducted into the DPSC''s Hall of Fame.

While at DPSC, he served as the Chairman of the Board of the Credit Union. Under his leadership, the assets rose from $7 million to $26 million. When DPSC was about to close, Harry was involved in a merger with the Sun Federal Credit Union. The result was a $104 million organization. Harry was on the Sun Federal Credit Union''s Board of Directors.

Harry served in the U.S. Air Force from January 1951 to October 1954 where he received an early out with an honorable discharge.

He was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church since 1966. He served as secretary of the Men''s Association, secretary of the Church''s Finance Committee, secretary of the Parish Council, and Chairman of the Church''s School Tuition committee. Harry taught computer science at the school prior to its closing in 2002 and then went on to teach computer technology at DePaul Catholic School. He received two awards from the St. Therese Men''s Association- an Excellence Award in 1997 and the Distinguished Leadership Award in 1998 and 2008.

He is survived by his wife Vivian E. (nee Carey), 3 daughters Valerie Nutter-Lawrence and her husband, Mark, the late Lisa Rodgers and Christine Nutter, 1 granddaughter, Devon Rodgers, and Uncle Solomon Fuller, a sister Janet Glass and a host of family and friends.
