Obituary

Janet May (Neal) Horning went home to be with the Lord on October 22, 2022 at the age of 87. Born in 1934 in Norristown to the late George R. and Stella J. (Clayton) Neal, she was raised in Plymouth Meeting where she attended the Barren Hill Elementary School and graduated from Springfield High School in 1952, where she excelled in many sports, including lacrosse, field hockey and basketball. She attended nursing school for one year before deciding it was not for her. She then starting working for the old Bell Telephone in Conshohocken. One of her hobbies was roller skating, where she met her future husband, the late James K. Horning. They married in 1955, started a family and moved to Conshohocken where they raised three children. After their youngest was born, Janet got a job as a school bus driver for Romano's Bus Service, where she drove for eight years. After her divorce, Janet went to work for the District Court of Montgomery County where she worked as a bookkeeper for 28
years until her retirement in 2000. She also worked part time at the Hallmark Card Land store in the Plymouth Meeting Mall for many years. Janet was a lifelong member of the Plymouth Meeting E. C. Church where she taught Sunday school for 25 years, helped out with Bible School and yard sales, was a member of the church choir and devoted her musical talents to playing the organ and piano until she retired in 2019. She had many interests, including bowling, reading, Mall walking and volunteering at the old Montgomery Hospital and later Einstein Montgomery for 20 years. She was an avid traveler and went on numerous trips with a core group of friends from church, the hospital and Card Land, travelling all over the world, including Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii and Iceland (twice), Russia and the Panama Canal. She was also an animal lover and greatly missed her late Black Lab Monty and loved her current companion, a cat named Martin.
Janet is survived by her daughter Susan, sons James Jr. and George (Betsy), four grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She was a beloved mom and "Grammy" and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend her funeral service at the Kirk & Nice Funeral Home at George Washington Memorial Park, 80 Stenton Ave, Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462 on Saturday November 5, 2022 at 11:00 AM. A visitation will be held Saturday morning from 10 AM at the funeral home. Donations can be made in Janet's name to the Plymouth Meeting E. C. Church, 42 E. Germantown Pike, Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462 or any animal shelter of your choosing.
