Obituary of John Carter
Colonel Retired John Benjamin Carter, United States Army of Philadelphia, PA graciously departed this life at his home on Friday, 14 January 2011 after a long illness. He was a native of Catskill, NY where he received his basic education. After completing Catskill High School, he received a Bachelor of Science degree from Howard University where he distinguished himself academically and athletically.
A devoted and skilled military officer for almost 30 years, he served at all levels of command from infantry platoon leader to Headquarters at the U.S. Department of the Army. His duty tours included assignments to Germany, Spain, Korea, France, Norway, Japan and Vietnam. Ultimately, he was awarded rank of Colonel.
Organizationally, John was affiliated with Omega Psi Phi, American Legions, Disabled Veterans Association, Military Officers Association and Howard University Alumni - Philadelphia Chapter.
He leaves to mourn his devoted and loving wife, Gloria Ricks Carter, two daughters: Margaret Washington of Baltimore, MD and Jonelle Lemcke of Frederiksberg, Denmark; two brothers, one sister; 4 brothers -in- law, and two sisters-in-law; 3 grandchildren and 2 great- grandchildren and a host of other family and friends.
