Lockwood Alexander Johnston, Jr. (Locky) of Plymouth Meeting, PA, son of Lockwood Alexander and Rena Wheaton Johnston. Born 10/10/20 in Conshohocken, PA. Predeceased by his wife of 45 years, Florence Rulon Johnston; a son, Kenneth L. Johnston; three brothers, Leon, Cecil and Howard; and three sisters, Sylvia Beaver, Clara Earle and Aleta Faust. Survived by five children, Blanche Rena Huntsman, Malvern, PA; Betty Johnston Christensen (Mike), Fountainville, PA; Joan Rulon Greer (Dave), Perkasie, PA; Charles Rulon, Media, PA; and Thomas Rulon (Jan), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada; a daughter-in-law, Jean Campitelli, and eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Johnston graduated from Conshohocken High School class of 1938 and The Wheaton School of Business in Williamsport, PA. For most of his life, he was employed by the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard and in later years, the Naval Supply Depot in North Philadelphia before his retirement in 1973.
Mr. Johnston was also a country and western singer known for his yodeling who first appeared with Pop Johnston and the Boys and later with his own band, Locky Johnston and the Lone Stars. In the early 1950''s, he appeared with Bill Haley and the Comets. He played the guitar, violin, banjo and the bass fiddle and entertained for square dances, social events, the Gimbels Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Edgemont Inn, and local parks including Lenape Park and Lakeside Park. He also appeared on local radio and television in its infancy.
During World War II, Mr. Johnston served as a Master Sergeant with the Army as occupation troops in Japan from 1945-1947. During that time he received a Commendation from the United States Government for entertaining the troops and improving morale. He also hosted his own radio station.
He was an avid coin and stamp collector for many years. He and his wife also enjoyed traveling and camping in their R.V. across North America. They belonged to numerous square dance clubs and danced several times each week.
Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing at the Heritage Chapel at George Washington Memorial Park, Monday, February 8, 2016, 80 Stenton Ave., Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462, beginning at 10am followed by his funeral service at 11am.
