On Sunday, March 6, 2022, Madelyn Morris, loving sister, aunt, and friend passed away at age 91.
Madelyn was the 2nd of four children born in January, 1931 in Bronx, NY to Edgar and Madelyn (Mason) Johnson. Madelyn's family moved to Philadelphia in 1936. After graduating from West Philadelphia High School, she went to work for the Veterans' Administration until her retirement in 1972.
In May, 1953, Madelyn married Walter Morris, Jr., a veteran of WWII and they moved to West Mt. Airy.
Over the years, Madelyn served her community in many ways. In the 1960s, she was an activist supporting national and local groups during the civil rights movement. She was the Judge of Elections for her district for many years, and was the inaugural Membership Coordinator for over 25 years for the Weaver's Way Coop from its beginning.
Madelyn was also active in West Mt. Airy Neighbors for many years. She was actively engaged in neighborhood activities spearheading initiatives like annual snow removal contracts for the neighbors, and 'Walk & Talks', opportunities for neighbors to gather and socialize that encouraged local engagement and cohesive neighborhoods. Along with her two sisters, Madelyn shared the "50 Good Neighbors" award in 2010.
Madelyn was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Walter Jr., and her parents Edgar Sr. & Madelyn. She is survived by her sisters, Barbara and Sylvia, brother, Edgar Jr. (Buddy), niece, Merle, nephews, Nigel and Jose, many cousins, and her dear friend, Priscilla.
A private graveside service will take place on Saturday, March 12 th , 2022 at Eden Cemetery (Collingdale, PA) where Madelyn will be laid to rest with her husband. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society in Madelyn's honor at donate3.cancer.org or 1-800-277-2345.
