IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Major General
George William Schuler, Us Army (Ret.)
January 3, 1945 – January 22, 2020
Dr. George William Schuler, Educator and Major General, US Army National Guard (Retired), passed away on January 22, 2020 in Blue Bell, PA. He was 75.
Husband, Father, Brother, Son, Friend, Mentor and Compassionate ear, to anyone who knew George, he was also a consummate teller of stories.
In his own words, (taken from semi-autobiographical book called " Germantown to Saigon and Beyond ") his story was "about a boy growing up in a much simpler era who managed to grow into a much better person despite the many self-inflicted social wounds during his high school exploits covering three different high schools. The boy became a man during his Army years, honing those skills in the rice paddies of Vietnam and practicing leadership skills later on with the Army and educational experiences within the school district of Philadelphia."
George was born in Philadelphia on January 3, 1945 to the late George William, Sr. and Helen (Rupp) Schuler. George grew up on the west side of Germantown, Philadelphia with his brother, Bill and sister, Helen, graduating from Mifflin Elementary in 1958 and Germantown High School in 1963. George attended the University of Pennsylvania for 2 years before being drafted into the U.S. Army in 1967 where spent the next 28 years in the Army rising in rank from Private to Major General.
George was an infantry platoon leader in Vietnam in 1969 with the 3 rd Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division, where he was awarded the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Distinguished Service (NG), Meritorious Service, Vietnam Service Medals as well as the Combat Infantry Badge, Parachute Badge and the Jungle expert badge. He was inducted into the Officers' Candidate School Hall of Fame in 1992.
George also holds a B.S. in Education, Masters In Educational Leadership and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership and Curriculum Development, from Temple University. Utilizing his educational experiences and leadership qualities honed in the military, George rose through the ranks of the Philadelphia School District first as a teacher, eventually becoming Regional Superintendent.
In addition to his lifelong love of learning and continual self-improvement, George had a wide variety of other interests that included his 1950 MG TD, a strong affection for the Walnut Street Theatre, going to Philadelphia Union games with his son Garth and grandson Haydn, summer trips to Martha's Vineyard with son Jared, daughter-in-law Sarah, and their two children, Kellan and Everly and a love of all things history and the lessons we can learn from those that came before us. George was an avid traveler, taking many trips with his wife Cathy all over the world and was an animal lover, showering Rosie, his 15 year old pit-bull terrier mix, with love and attention.
In seventy-five years, George packed as much into life as any one person could ever hope to do…. with a collection of thousands of stories to tell about each step of that journey.
George leaves behind a wife of fifty one years, Cathy (Spears) Schuler, Son, Garth Schuler, grandson Haydn, Son Jared Schuler, Daughter in-law Sarah, and their two children, Kellan and Everly. He is also survived by his younger brother, Bill Schuler.
George will be remembered by friends and family on Saturday, February 8, 2020 at Normandy Farm/The Farmer's Daughter Restaurant located at 1401 Morris Rd., Blue Bell, PA 19422. The celebration of life will begin at 11 AM with memories and stories being shared by friends and family. This will be followed by lunch at 12:30 to which all are invited. The family asks that you rsvp to Jared Schuler ( jschuler06@gmail.com ) so an accurate headcount can be provided to the venue for food and refreshment. If you would also like to publicly share a story or memory of George to those in attendance, please feel free to also make mention of that in your communication with Jared.
