A local teen who brought awareness to kids will kidney illness has died.
Melika Rose Roberts was born on November 3, 1993 in Monterey Park, California to Kenneth Michael and Debra Evora Roberts. At the age of 3, her parents relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Melika grew up in Mt. Airy, Pennsylvania. On August 30, 2013, Melika died at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, following a medical procedure.
A reporter from CBS 3once called her a four-foot nine dynamo in connection with a fund-raising event called Kidney Kicks! that she hosted for the nephrology division of Children's Hospital . Melika Roberts started her education in Catholic schools attending St. Martin de Porres in Germantown before graduating to attend Norwood-Fontbonne Academy in Chestnut Hill. Later, Melika was home schooled because of health challenges, but once she was feeling better she pleaded with her parents to go back to school to graduate with her class and attend her prom. She attended Motivation High School in Southwest Philadelphia.
Melika graduated with many honors and in the fall of 2012, attended Montgomery County Community College as a freshman majoring in theatre.
Melika was a volunteer for various community service events with her mother and on any given day you could find her helping her father at his restaurant in Mt. Airy, Chef Ken's Caf.
She regularly attended Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania with her aunt and cousin and St. Monica Roman Catholic
Church in Atlantic City, New Jersey with her grandmother. Her life
will be remembered forever. In the most unselfish gift of life, Melika was an organ donor and received A Gift of Life Acknowledgment for her compassion decision to help others through organ donation.
