Milan Unson
Coleman
Dec 18, 1953 — Sep 11, 2026
Milan Unson Coleman’s life was defined by grace. She was born on December 18, 1953, on the island of Mindoro in the central Philippines, the eldest of 10 children. Mellie’s earthly life ended on September 11, 2026, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, after a four-year struggle with kidney disease. Even with physical limitations, her final chapter was defined by new friendships with her beloved nurses and care for fellow patients.
Mellie’s life in the Philippines changed dramatically in 1974 when she met an American sailor named Keith while working as a receptionist at the Sky Club, a popular spot for enlisted men on Subic Naval Base. After a short engagement, they were married—a love story and partnership spanning nearly 53 years.
After Keith completed his service in the Navy, the couple and new baby, Jeff, moved to New York state to live with his parents, Bob and Grace. While the rent was free, church attendance at the Bible Presbyterian Church of Grand Island was required. This too was a transformative moment.
While both had nominally religious backgrounds, it was there that Keith and Milan surrendered their lives to Jesus and were soon to embark on decades of short- and long-term missionary service to countries like Kenya, Brazil, Peru, Korea, Singapore, and a joyful, four-year assignment in Mellie’s homeland of the Philippines.
In 1988, Keith and Mellie moved to the southwestern Pennsylvania town of Apollo—a community in deep despair following the collapse of major industries. Their ministry was among some of the most challenging but rewarding of their life together. After 15 years, they accepted a call to Philadelphia and the headquarters of the Independent Board for Presbyterian Foreign Missions—serving missionary workers and their families. Until recent weeks, Keith and Mellie shared an office, supporting each other and responding to the needs of countless friends and family around the world—an extraordinary partnership.
Mellie never learned to drive, never took the U.S. citizenship test, and despite a strong academic record in high school, never attended college. Instead of diminishing her effectiveness, these realities made their marriage especially important—they were incomplete without each other.
Mellie Coleman was an incessant note writer, and in recent years, texter—flooding phones with daily messages of love and encouragement. She was a walking checklist for her family, and her habit of gift giving and leaving envelopes of “coffee money” at the homes of her children and grandchildren—and anyone in need—was well known. She never requested or expected thanks.
Besides her love for Keith, Mellie stayed in constant contact with their sons, Jeff and Joel, and their wives, Rebecca and Janine. She insisted they were “daughters”—never in-laws. As “Lola,” love for her grandchildren wasn’t limited to Anna Grace, Teddy,
Charlotte Milan, Henry, and most recently Wenjia, but to an ever-growing list who called her Mom, Nanay, Auntie, and Tita. Despite the distance, she remained in close contact with her surviving brothers and sisters—Leonard, Mirasol, Marites, Marissa, Margie, Nancy, Maricel, Marilyn, and Allan—often playing the role of counselor and best friend.
Milan Unson Coleman would want the reader of this brief life portrait to know that the assurance she had of God’s forgiveness and grace and the certain hope of Heaven was not exclusive to her, but to all who trust fully in Jesus. Because of this, the best part of her story is still to come.
