Myungsook Lee passed away peacefully at the age of 84 on Thursday, August 18, 2022. She was a devoted and beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. Born as Myungsook Woo in 1938 in Sinuiju, North Korea, on the border of China, she was the youngest of five children raised in a loving Christian family. Her parents owned a hardware store; her father later worked at the American Embassy and also as an English teacher in Seoul.
When Myungsook was around six years old, her family fled North Korea on foot on a treacherous route, her father carrying her on his back. She and her father were separated from the rest of the family at the North-South Korean border. After two weeks of desperate searching, the family was joyfully reunited.
Myungsook grew up in Seoul, South Korea and attended an all-girls middle school and high school. She excelled in ballet and was talented in music, studying Piano Performance at the renowned Ewha Women's University.
Myungsook was introduced to Chong-Sik Lee by her brother Sung-sig, who met Chong-Sik while he was a PhD student at UC Berkeley. She and Dr. Lee were married in Hanover, NH on the Dartmouth College campus in 1961.
When Dr. Lee became Professor of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania, they moved first to Havertown and soon permanently settled down on Cypress Lane in Berwyn. They loved their neighbors and the neighborhood.
Myungsook was well known for her grace, compassion, kindness and quiet wit. She excelled at Korean cooking and enjoyed nourishing others.
Myungsook was active and faithful in church, singing and accompanying the choir on piano, and also taught piano to young students. She also cherished caring for her three grandchildren, and enjoyed indoor and outdoor gardening. She often visited the sick and elderly, bringing homemade meals and her gentle company. Like her husband, Myungsook was an avid tennis player at the Upper Main Line YMCA and Great Valley Racquet Club.
Myungsook was well-loved by her family and preceded in death by her son Roger in 1998, and her husband Chong-Sik in 2021. In addition to her daughters Sharon and Gina, and grandchildren Kyra, Sophia, and Nicholas, Myungsook is survived by several nieces and nephews, notably Heisun Ahn from Monterey, California.
Services will be held on Saturday, August 27, 2022 at 10:00 am at George Washington Memorial Park Heritage Chapel at 80 Stenton Avenue in Plymouth Meeting, Pennsylvania. The family requests that masks be worn.
Outdoor graveside burial will take place at the same location at 11:00 am at section PP 177.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Korean United Church of Philadelphia Scholarship Fund, 1200 W. Cheltenham Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19126 or in Myungsook Lee's memory designated to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund:
