Obituary

On Tuesday, October 6, 2015, with his wife and daughter by his side, Norbert George Bain, III, passed away peacefully at his home in Wyncote, Pennsylvania, ending a valiant 14 year battle with Multiple Sclerosis and Prostate Cancer. He was 61 years old.

Norbert, affectionately called "Nubbins" or "Nubs", was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on December 21, 1953, the son of the late Dr. Norbert George Bain, Jr, DDS, and Willadine Grinnage Bain, a Philadelphia Public School teacher and administrator. A short time later he was joined by his sister, Coralie. They were not only brother and sister, but close friends, and seldom was one seen without the other by their side.

Norbert grew up in West Mt Airy, Philadelphia. He had remained close with many of the friends he knew as a child. After graduation from Philadelphia Central High School, Norbert attended his parents'' Alma Mater, Howard University in Washington, DC. He received his BA from the School of Communication. While at Howard, Norbert pursued his passion for Radio, Television, Photography and Film. He wrote, produced and directed a student film using a Bolex 16mm camera. The film is "in the can" at his home, and has not been seen since its original production date. The Bolex still sits on a shelf in his closet.

When Norbert returned to Philadelphia after college he set off in earnest to make his mark in local Radio and Television. He launched an original radio program, "The Infinite Hourglass", at Temple University''s radio station WRTI. In time Norbert relocated to Atlanta, Georgia. It was the early 1980''s and commercial cable networking was in its infancy. Norbert had positioned himself in the right place at the right time. As one of Atlanta Cable''s first community producers he covered events throughout Atlanta, including the summer Jazz Festival.

In December 1986, Norbert returned to Philadelphia. On December 26th Norbert was sent on a blind date arranged by his sister, Coralie. They went to the club "Pulsations". Sound familiar? The blind date was native born Natalie Rachel Slaughter, the youngest daughter of the late James C. Slaughter, Sr. and the late Beverly LaBarre Green. Natalie had relocated to Philadelphia in 1985 from Ann Arbor, Michigan, to help her grandmother, the late Ethel H. Nickens. Norbert and Natalie were married on August 27, 1988, at Christ Church and St. Michael''s Episcopal Church in Germantown. On April 7, 1994, the 2 became 3 with the arrival of their beautiful daughter, Rachel Eleanor. They moved to their dream house on Gowen Circle in 1996.

Norbert taught Audio-Visual Communications Technology at Thomas Alva Edison High School for 13 years. He often remarked that his classroom was a television studio, and it was; complete with control booth and 3 commercial quality television cameras. Always innovative and challenged by new technology, he soon incorporated computer workshops and digital media projects into his curriculum. He was well-loved by his students, and well-respected by his peers. He received numerous accolades for the work done by his students. In 1991 he was honored by the Mid-Atlantic Emmy Awards for Co-Directing "Don''t Dance with Death", a public service announcement video designed to warn teenagers of the link between un-safe sex and AIDS.

In 2001 Norbert was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. The disease progressed rapidly and by 2004 he took disability retirement from teaching. Even as Norbert became more physically independent on others, he maintained a positive attitude for life. Norbert will always be remembered for his wit, sense of humor, love of jazz, and desire to share ideas with others. He is watching us today with a cheerful smile, and an enthusiastic "Thumbs Up"!

Left to mourn his loss, and cherish his memory are his wife, Natalie and their daughter, Rachel; his mother, Willadine Bain; his sister Coralie Barksdale and her husband Greg; his nephew, Gregory Barksdale and his wife Leah; his sister-in-law Beverly Brown and her husband, Frank; the Freelon, Slaughter, and Raheem families, and a host of loving friends.

In lieu of flowers, family requests donations be made in Norbert's memory to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
