Obituary

Richard Engle Burr, 67, born October 16, 1955, beloved husband of Gwen Fontaine (Bonsall) Burr, found peace on February 24, 2023 enduring a heroic battle after being diagnosed with a brain tumor on August 21, 2022. Richard was born in Glen Ridge, NJ to parents Patricia Virginia (Mann) Burr and Samuel Engel Burr III, both deceased.  Richard is survived by his sister, Kathi Burr Harp and brother Chuck Burr, his son Preston Burr, daughter Meridith Burr Crews and stepdaughters Kelly Robins, Aubrey Donnon and Bryce Donnon.  Richard was "Pop Pop" to three grandchildren and "Uncle Rick" or just "Rick" to six nieces and nephews and five great nieces and nephews. Richard and his family lived in many states.  He attended Memorial High School in Cedar Grove, NJ, Arlington Heights High School in Fort Worth, TX and then onto Texas Tech in Lubbock, TX.  Richard loved sports and played organized baseball through 8th grade, wrestled in 9th grade and swam in 10th, 11th and 12th grade and received a full scholarship to Texas Tech and was on their swim team. Richard also loved to watch sports...golf and football were his favorites.  When he and Gwen started dating and with him having lived in Texas for many years, she only had one question for him: "Who do you root for in football?".  Gwen, being a die hard Eagles fan, said the date would have ended if he had said, "Dallas!" Richard was the consummate sales person.  He started by selling cars and he was the #1 salesperson at Jerry Boone Ford, a large dealership In Texas, at just 19 years old.  Then onto selling gypsum board and ladies dresses.  But his forte was in the food service industry.  He was either a vice president, president and/or national sales director for companies such as Garland, Leggett & Platt, Grindmaster Cecilware and ended with Electrolux.  He enriched the lives of everyone he came into contact with. Richard also had lifetime friends that he would do anything for no matter where they lived or where he lived.  He was often referred to as "a brother from another mother", always with a smile on his face, he had a hearty laugh, a big bear hug, was famous for his cranberry shortbread cookies and his "dad jokes".   He was known to enjoy a good bourbon now and again, with a cigar.  Friends and family would all agree it was his love of hosting dinner that was his favorite pastime.  Always a perfectly grilled steak, baked potatoes, caesar salad and a perfectly matched bottle (or two) of red wine.  Travel was another favorite pastime:  Nantucket, NYC and Broadway shows, Sandaway Suites in Oxford MD, Annapolis, Boston, Mystic, Stonington, Galveston, Rancho Cucamonga, upstate New York, England and he always found the best restaurants wherever he was.  Richard will be missed by all.  Services and interment will be private.
