Obituary of Richard Shepherd
Shepherd, Richard H. Sr. a long time resident of Chestnut Hill, passed away at his residence at The Hill at Whitemarsh. He was 88. Born in Philadelphia, he was the son of the late, Mary (nee Colter) and Walter B. Shepherd. He was a graduate of Germantown High School and the University of Miami.
A war hero who served as a pilot in the United States Air Corp in the Indo China Campaign flying "The Hump", he received the Air Medal and Distinguished Flying Cross. He was one of an elite group of American pilots to be selected for RAF Flight training where he received both his RAF and US wings. During the Korean War, he served as a flight instructor. He continued his love of flying and was an avid pilot well into his seventies.
After a distinguished career with Fidelity & Deposit Company of Maryland, in 1967, he and his wife, Ruth, started a surety bond agency bearing his name.
He was a member of the Philadelphia Cricket Club and the Yacht Club of Stone Harbor.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth (nee Hinkel), a son, Richard, Jr. a daughter, Candace Adams, 2 granddaughters, Elizabeth Boyer and Tavi Deming, 2 grandsons, Hunter Adams and Drew Adams and 3 great grandchildren.
Services are private at the request of the family.
