Robert, 92, of Taylor's Island, MD, died Tuesday, January 10, 2017. He was born to the late William K. Burkey and Erma H. Frantz on October 16, 1924, in Norristown, PA. He attended Norristown Area schools. Robert was a WWII Veteran. He married Dorothy M. Leonard on July 29, 1944 and had five children. He was a carpenter and helped build many homes in the Montgomery County, PA area. He was also employed by Norristown State Hospital and Montgomery County Community College until his retirement in 1984 when he moved to Maryland with his wife, Dorothy. They were married for 69 years until her death in Jan. 2014.
Robert enjoyed fishing, crabbing and spending time with his family and friends. He also took pride in putting a smile on your face by telling his jokes.

He is survived by his children Robert L. Burkey, Jr. of Norristown, PA; Gary (Mildred) Burkey of Secretary, MD; Joseph (Patricia) Burkey of Norristown, PA; Dorothea (Thomas) Matey of Hurlock, MD; 22 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; brother Elwood (Essie) Burkey of Hoopers Island, MD; and numerous nieces and nephews. Robert was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy; son Michael; 2 grandchildren; 3 brothers; and four sisters.

Relatives and friends are invited to his viewing on Monday, January 16th from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Kirk & Nice Funeral Home, 80 Stenton Ave., Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462.
