Obituary

Sally Haws Johnson passed away peacefully on March 12, 2023 at The Hill at Whitemarsh in Lafayette Hill, Pa, with her family around her. She was 93.

Sally was a dearly beloved mother to her four children, Laura Johnson (Laura Jereski), Lexanne Anderson-Bell (Andrew), Peter Hunt-Johnson (Nora), and Amy Johnson (Edward Brady). She also loved and will be much missed by her six grandchildren, Lowell and Gordon Abbott, Evan and Alison Hunt-Johnson, and Kyle and Arden Brady. She was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, the Reverend Stanley Ethan Johnson.

Sally graduated from Haverford High School in 1947and from Wilson College in 1951 with a degree in chemistry. After further studies in chemistry at Mount Holyoke College, she married Stanley in 1952. She worked briefly as a chemist at Smith Kline and French, taught physics at the Springside School in Chestnut Hill, Philadelphia, and then devoted her considerable energy for the next decade or so to raising her four children and doing community volunteer work in University City, Philadelphia. In the late 1960s she returned to work at the University of Pennsylvania, where Stanley served as Chaplain, working in the biochemistry department, overseeing services for students with disabilities, and finally as an editor in the Office of Alumni Relations.

Sally deeply loved the natural world and passed her passion for it on to her children. After she retired, she became a serious devotee of birdwatching, which she pursued in some far corners of the world but equally in her own backyard. Her curiosity extended to the identification of trees and then to studying lichen and mosses. She volunteered with the Schuylkill Valley Nature Center, helping, among other things, to protect migratory amphibians near the Wissahickon Creek. Sally brought enthusiasm and dedication to all of these endeavors and made and kept a broad set of friends throughout her life.

A funeral service will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, Whitemarsh, Pa on March 23, 2023, at 11:00 a.m., preceded by a private burial. Instead of flowers, the family requests that you consider donations to the Schuylkill Center for Environmental Education or the Northeast Pennsylvania Audubon Society.
