IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Steven W.
Young
January 5, 1965 – January 8, 2024
Steven W. Young, 59, a lifelong resident of Willow Grove, passed away on January 8th, 2024 after a courageous struggle. Steven was born on January 5th, 1965, in Philadelphia, and was raised, and resided in Willow Grove. He was the second oldest of Archie and Peggyann Young's four children.
Steven is survived by his sister, Nancy Young, his brother, Robert Young, his sister in law, Lynne Young, and his niece, Megan Young. He is preceded in death by his parents, Archie and Peggyann (Caldwell) Young, his sister, Carol Ann Young, his paternal grandparents, William and Eveline Young, and his maternal grandparents, Thomas and Margaret Caldwell.
Steve was a 1982 graduate of Upper Dublin High School in Fort Washington, Pennsylvania, he went on to Drexel University where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering from Drexel University in 1987, followed later by Master of Education degree in Teaching Secondary Mathematics from Beaver College (now Arcadia University).
Steve's first job was at RCA, which later became G.E. Aerospace, in Camden, New Jersey. During his tenure at G.E. Aerospace, Steve worked with a targeted group of engineers whose main responsibility was the Trident Nuclear Submarine program. Steve put his career on hold to return to school to pursue his passion for mathematics, and desire to share that love, by earning a Master of Education degree in Teaching with a focus on teaching secondary mathematics. Steve served the students of the Centennial School District in Bucks County. He worked at William Tennent High School in Warminster teaching various math classes to 9th through 12th grade students. While teaching math at William Tennent, Steve was presented with a unique opportunity to go back into business and industry. Though Steve enjoyed his brief teaching career, he was also excited to put his engineering skills and abilities back to use working for SKF Industries (now known as SKF USA Inc.) in Lansdale. Steve was employed at SKF for over 20 years prior to his retirement in 2020. Even though Steve went back into the engineering industry, he still found time to pursue his interest in teaching mathematics by tutoring local high school students in various math subjects.
Steve was an avid sports fan his entire life. As a student in middle school & high school Steve and his younger brother, Rob, played on the township's local little league coached by their dad, Archie Young. Whether it was the "Young White Sox" or the "Young Yankees", Steve & Rob's little league team won several championships. As Steve grew older, his interest in sports only continued to grow. While he didn't continue playing sports after leaving high school, Steve could often be found attending the games of both the boys' and girls' basketball teams from Upper Dublin High School every season for well over 20 years. He always jumped at the opportunity to attend Suburban One basketball playoff and championship games, especially when his Upper Dublin Cardinals were playing. On the few occasions when the Upper Dublin teams made it to the state championships, Steve made it a point to go to those games to support his UD Cardinals even if he had to travel to various districts in the state. Steve was also a huge fan of both college and professional football. Saturdays were for college football, while Sundays were reserved for the NFL. In the spring and summer, Steve's attention focused on following the Philadelphia Phillies. Seeing the Phillies win the 1980 and 2008 World Series were definite highlights for Steve. Steve was a fan of all sports, anyone who knew Steve knows that his greatest love was college basketball and the annual March Madness college basketball tournament. When possible, he even watched several games at a time so he didn't miss any of the hoop action. The other great interest in Steve's life was travel and exploration. He had a sense of adventure that was second to none. From riding some of the country's tallest and fastest roller coasters to bungee jumping off of the roof of the Stratosphere in Las Vegas, Steve was a thrill seeker.
For Steve, life itself was an adventure and he never wasted an opportunity to experience all that life had to offer. While he may not have had a lot of years in his life, he certainly put a lot of life into the years he had.
