IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Thomas Bracken
Fleming
September 23, 1960 – July 28, 2024
Thomas Bracken (Toby) Fleming, filmmaker, business and travel entrepreneur, died at the age of 63, on Sunday, July 28, following a sudden illness at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. The youngest of four sons born to Thomas and Phyllys Fleming, Toby's sense of humor and genial outgoing personality made him beloved by all who knew him. He attended Chestnut Hill Academy, The Taft School, and Haverford College following his father and older brother Christopher Fleming. He in turn was followed by his daughter Amanda, a third generation Haverford alumna in the Fleming family.
After Haverford, where Toby majored in Anthropology, he went to the University of Southern California where he earned his M.A. in Visual Anthropology. "Gang Cops," his graduating film project with fellow student Dan Marks, was a documentary about the Crips and Bloods, rival street gangs in Los Angeles. The film was awarded a Student Academy Award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for best student documentary, which put them into the running for Best Documentary Short Film at the 1988 Oscars awards ceremony. It was a memorable family outing for the Fleming clan with parents and brothers donning red carpet outfits to attend the celebration.
For several years, Toby worked in video production and in family business projects until 2002 when he and his wife Tricia, a yoga instructor, opened Twisters Wellness Centers in Erdenheim and Ambler, PA. As their clientele grew, Toby and Tricia began organizing yoga retreats in Central America and Europe. The new business was founded on Toby's love of traveling the world. T&T Travel organized many tours over the past nine years including trips to Costa Rica, France, Italy, Ireland, Portugal, and more.
Toby is survived by his wife of 31 years, Patricia Fleming, his daughters Amanda, Julia, and Sarah, his older brothers Christopher, John, and Peter, his aunt Selby McPhee of Washington, DC, and three loving dogs that never left his side. Toby was a passionate and dedicated father and husband who loved nothing more than to spend time with his wife and daughters. He will be deeply missed by family and friends. A celebration of his life will be held on August 16 from 1 – 4pm at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. In lieu of flowers, donations in Toby's memory may be made to Haverford College: https://www.haverford.edu/support-haverford-today .
