Obituary of Walter King

Walt King, a 56 year resident of Oreland, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2013. He was born November 16, 1920 in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia and graduated from Simon Gratz High School. He proudly served in World War II in Africa and Italy in the 816th Bombardment Group of the Army Air Force from 1942 to 1945. After the war, he returned to Philadelphia and attended Drexel Institute of Technology.

Walt met his wife Betty (Potts) in Cape May, NJ in 1946 and they were married 64 years. He was the devoted father of Walter Jr. (Louise) and Elizabeth King DeVito (Fred J.) and the loving grandfather of Sarah Long (Paul), Suzanne Amrich (Jason) and Melissa Coley (Dan) and great-grandfather of Mackenzie Ann Long and Jaxon Walter Coley. He was in the printing industry all his working life, first at Curtis Publishing Company in Philadelphia, and then at Montgomery Publishing Company in Fort Washington.

Betty and he were active volunteers at Jeanes Hospital and Walt especially enjoyed distributing publications, snacks and cheer to patients and staff. He also enjoyed gatherings with family and friends as well as group travels along the East Coast. Walt/Dad/Granddad was a good man that loved being with others, telling stories and enjoying life.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The First Presbyterian Church in Germantown, 35 W. Chelten Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19144 or to Jeanes Hospital, Volunteer Department, 7600 Central Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19111.
