Obituary

William R. Briggs, Jr., of Springhouse Estates, formerly of Chestnut Hill, passed away Sunday, July 15, 2018 after a prolonged illness. Born March 14, 1940, in Philadelphia, he was the son of William R. Briggs and his wife Frances A. (Eaton). He grew up in Wyndmoor, graduating from Germantown Academy and Ursinus College.

He joined the US Navy in 1962 and served two tours in Vietnam earning several medals and a combat action ribbon retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander. He was active in the US Navy Reserves and volunteered with the USO for many years.

He began his career in banking at PNB in Philadelphia and retired as a Vice President of commercial banking for Wachovia.

He loved living in Chestnut Hill, walking the neighborhood and on the Avenue. He especially enjoyed spending time in Ocean City, NJ with his family.  Besides walking, he loved listening to classical music, reading and watching old black and white movies.

He was predeceased by his wife of 46 years, Eleanor (Watkins) in 2015. He is survived by his daughter Stephanie (Michael DiMatties) of Clarksboro, NJ; his son W. Robert Briggs (Rachel Shusterman) of Downingtown; grandchildren Michael and Justin DiMatties and Jenica and Lucia Briggs.

All are invited to a viewing on Sat. July 21 from 9:30-10:30am, and a funeral service at 10:30am, both at Kirk & Nice Funeral Home, 80 Stenton Ave. Plymouth Meeting, PA 19462. Interment at George Washington Memorial Park to follow.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's research at michaeljfox.org or in his memory to the USO at USO.org.
